Tartufino & The Empress Maria Theresa

Maria Theresa Walburga Amalia Christina, born in Vienna, Austria, on May 13, 1717, was the eldest daughter of the emperor Charles VI, Holy Roman Emperor.

Maria Theresa was the only female ruler of the Habsburg dominions and the last of the House of Habsburg. She started her 40-year reign when her father, Emperor Charles VI, died in October 1740. She was the sovereign of Austria, Hungary, Croatia, Bohemia, Mantua, Milan, Lodomeria and Galicia, the Austrian Netherlands and Parma. By marriage with Francis I, Holy Roman Emperor, she was Duches of Lorraine, Grande Duchess of Tuscany and Holy Roman Empress.

Under the Maria Theresa reign in the 18th century, when Croatia was under Austrian rule, Istrian white truffles were already a well appreciated product. According to the old tales and documents even Maria Theresa herself, on her journey from Trieste to Vienna, used to come to Istria to enjoy this speciality, and the official archives of the Vienna Court confirm that truffles had been on the Royal menu.

In his reign Maria Theresa was famous not only for her successful reforms and her vigorous foreign policy but also as a wife and mother. His family increased rapidly and flourished. She bore her husband sixteen children (five boys and eleven girls) within the space of nineteen years, giving birth to her first child at twenty and her last at thirty-nine.

Given that Maria-Theresa enjoyed Istrian truffles, we believe that this miraculous Istrian jewel, as a powerful aphrodisiac, contributed to Maria Theresa to rapidly and quickly increase his Royal family.

With Croatian EU entry in June 2013, we decided to repeat history (come close to the Empress Maria Theresa and then again put truffles on the Royal menu) and we opened TARTUFINO company in Vienna, very close to the Schönbrunn Palace, home of Maria Theresa.
